With immense fervour and enthusiasm, GRV BMA Degree College hosted the much-anticipated cultural intra-collegiate fest, "Lilayam Utsav," on the 30th of September, 2024. The event was a remarkable showcase of unity, creativity, and cultural diversity, with students from various streams coming together to celebrate India's rich heritage.
The fest was structured to represent the culture and traditions of three different states, with the main streams of the college assigned specific regions to depict. The Commerce Department represented Kerala, the Management Department showcased the culture of Maharashtra, and the Computer Science Department was assigned Karnataka. This division not only fostered a sense of friendly competition but also allowed students to delve deeply into the traditions, festivals, and performing arts of each state.
The day was filled with both on-stage and off-stage performances, offering a platform for students to exhibit their talents and creativity. From the elegant classical dance form of Mohiniyattam to the grand and vibrant display of Kathakali, the students representing Kerala in the Commerce Department brought the state's cultural richness to life. The rhythmic beats of Kerala's traditional drums (Chenda) echoed through the venue, adding an authentic touch to the performances. The department also highlighted the traditional Kalaripayattu martial art form, displaying skill and discipline. Furthermore, the Onam Utsav was re-enacted, with students illustrating the significance of this harvest festival with traditional customs, dances, and songs. On the culinary front, Kerala’s cuisine took center stage, featuring delicacies like Sadya, a traditional vegetarian feast served on banana leaves, including dishes like Avial, Sambar, Payasam, and Pappadam.
The Management Department, tasked with representing Maharashtra, dazzled the audience with performances such as the lively Lavani dance, a folk art synonymous with the state. They added a fashionable twist to their cultural representation with a vibrant ramp walk that celebrated the fusion of traditional and modern Maharashtrian attire. The department also highlighted the grand celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, showcasing the immersion ceremony and rituals associated with this widely celebrated festival. The culinary offerings from Maharashtra included popular dishes like Vada Pav, Misal Pav, Puran Poli, and the traditional sweet Modak, which is a favorite during Ganesh Chaturthi.
The Computer Science Department took on the task of representing Karnataka, where they depicted various elements of the state's heritage. A key highlight was the fierce Hulli Dance, symbolizing strength and valor, where students used props resembling traditional drums, adding an energetic beat to the dance. The students brilliantly portrayed Karnataka's colorful festivities and rich traditions through drama and traditional dances. The performance of Kantara, which captured the spiritual and cultural essence of rural Karnataka, was a standout act that resonated with the audience. The culinary delights of Karnataka included traditional dishes like Bisi Bele Bath, Ragi Mudde, Mysore Pak, and Maddur Vada, offering a taste of the state's rich food heritage.
The participation and hard work of the students were evident throughout the fest. The energy and positivity they brought to their performances were commendable, as they worked tirelessly in collaboration with their teachers and the management to ensure that the event was a grand success. The tireless efforts of the faculty, who mentored and guided the students in their preparation, played a significant role in making Lilayam Utsav a memorable event.
The guests of the day, Mrs. Megha, Administrator GRV School and Mrs. Anitha, Accountant GRV School brought grace and warmth to the proceedings, ensuring the event ran smoothly. Mrs. Anitha, along with a panel of other faculty members, also had the responsibility of making the final judgment on the performances.
The students truly showcased their talents across a variety of events such as drama, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, Kerala drums, Hulli Dance with props as drums, Lavani, a ramp walk, Kantara, and the depiction of state festivals like Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi. In addition to performances, the event also highlighted the diverse and rich culinary traditions of Kerala, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. These performances and culinary presentations emphasized the diversity of Indian culture, and the students left no stone unturned in ensuring that every event was a reflection of the ethos and traditions of the respective states.
